(cos)WED: Ethylives Cosplay

Welcome to Cosplay Wednesday! We have another Washington state cosplayer, Ethylives Cosplay. We met her down at Rose City Comic Con and loved her Glinda cosplay so much! If you don’t know Wizard of Oz… well, I think all of us knows Wizard of Oz! Maybe just us older generations…with that said, if you got kids, SHOW THEM THIS MOVIE! :) Glinda is the most powerful sorceress in the Land of Oz, ruler of the Quadling Country (after overthrowing the Wicked Witch of the South), south of the Emerald City. We rarely see Glinda the Good Witch of the North cosplayers or much of Wizard of Oz cosplays anymore! Seeing Ethylives was very nostalgic of my childhood days. Let’s see how she portrayed Glinda and what she had to say about this cosplay.

1. How long have you been cosplaying?

Since I was 7. I was gonna be a space alien. My mom painted my face green. My grandmother and her wrapped my body with tin foil and duct tape. I had green antennae and a silver disposable pan as my breathing apparatus. I walked to a party where I won the costume contest.
I learned my first cosplay lesson. You can make something special out of anything.

2. Why did you choose to cosplay this character?

Well, my family, friends and I usually go as a group. So we always start there. For about 13 years I've wanted to do the Wizard of Oz. We finally had enough people for all of the main characters. I knew I had to be Glinda. The challenge of her dress obsessed me. Thoughts like how do I get all the poof? How do I make the crown? Stuff like that. I fall in love with my character by the time I'm done.

3. How long did it take you to complete?

It's amazing what you can make with a month and a half of unemployment. Embellishing each panel was most difficult. I basically covered my floor with wax paper laid down panels and glued on the jewels. But I'm thrilled with the result!

4. Any difficulties when constructing the costume?

Finding the right glue for the fabric. The fabric was so sheer the glue and rhinestone would slide down. Bejeweling the crown was tough. I honestly don't know how it made it through.

5. What do you love most about cosplaying this character?

Everyone loves Glinda. But what I learned this weekend was there is a generation of kids that had never seen The Wizard of OZ. I heard a lot of parents say they were gonna change that asap. I love taking pictures with kids! I was a young cosplayer. So if they see something that gets them into the same thing my job is done.

6. Where did you debut this costume? If you haven't... where do you plan to debut?

My group debuted at ECCC and I've gone to ACE and RCCC

7. What's next? Cosplay related of course...

Oh my gosh! I ask myself that on a daily basis. I recently acquired two totes of assorted top grain leather that I'd really like to use. I'm just not sure... It's a new medium. But I love the challenge.

We certainly enjoyed your cosplay and we hope that everyone else feels the same. We can’t wait to see what you have going on in the future.
