COS&Affection: Canada Day with Test Subject B Labs

COS&Affection: Canada Day with Test Subject B Labs

written by Justin Prince (@prince_justin)

Happy Canada day... this feels like deja vu. After we had to pull our earlier posted Canada Day feature, I hit the interwebs and decided to feature a friend of mine. Say hello to Brian, the mind behind Test Subject B Labs. Today we are featuring his Captain Canuck costume.

Justin Prince: Happy Canada Day.. what a day eh? So fitting to feature Captain Canuck today, tell us about the costume.

Brian: This was the redesign of Captain Canuck from his recent relaunch in 2014 by Chapterhouse Publishing and designed by Kalman Andrasofszky and originally created by Richard Comely in 1975. It is the costume I have gotten the most use out of. It needs a few touch ups now, but do I ever love it.

JP: How much of it did you make and did you have any help?

B: I made most of the suit over a 2 week period. I was on a time crunch near the end as I had to finish it for a Canada Day event a few years ago, so I had a bit of help to speed up putting the finishing touches and molding by my friend Joanna (Gravimetric Rush).

JP: What drew you to cosplaying as Captain Canuck?

B: I have the complete collection of the classic comics and even have a retro costume as well. It is an outrageous sci-fi/spy/superhero combo that you really don't see very often. This character along with Johnny Canuck, Nelvana, Northguard, Freelance and others are what Canada has for real home grown heroes. There is actually a very good documentary called Lost Heroes:The Untold Story Of Canadian Superheroes if anyone would like to learn more about them.

JP: Speaking of your home country, what do you love most about home?

B: The scenery of the rockies, the diversity among it's residents and visitors, and a community that supports each other. Anything that helps grow the stereotype to others that Canada is some kind of Utopia to my American friends

JP: How did you celebrate your Canada day?

B: This year I just relaxed at my local fair. I've had multiple years in a row where I wore Canuck, but I just wanted go as myself and enjoy the show. (and it was so hot out I would have melted).

JP: Final question... if you had the choice to give up Tim Hortons OR Poutine forever... which would you pick?

B: I am addicted to Iced Capps. So giving those up AND all of the other sandwiches, donuts, and goodies..... I would be fine giving up Poutine.

So there you have it! Happy Canada Day g33ks! Make sure to drop on by Brian's Facebook and give him a big sloppy like from your friendly neighborhood Justin Prince.
